A powdery white beach, crystal-clear waters, and stunning sunsets characterize Boracay Island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. In recent years, Boracay has undergone significant changes, from a 6-month closure in 2018 to the effects of the pandemic. These changes have led to new attractions, dining options, and more.
In this blog, I’ll share some changes you can expect to see on your next visit to Boracay.
Boracay Island: Changes to Boracay Philippines You Need To Know About: Crystal Kayak, Keyhole, and More
Crystal Kayak – A New Craze Among Tourists
In the past, Paraw and stand-up paddleboards were the most common watercraft seen along the beachfront. However, in recent years, crystal kayaks have become the latest craze among tourists.
The clear waters of Boracay are unmatched, and the transparent kayak provides an unparalleled view of the underwater world. It’s no wonder many want to have their photos taken while on this kayak, and the number of photos that go viral online is a testament to its popularity.
Don’t be shy about having your picture taken while on the crystal kayak. In reality, it will be just you and the boatman who will serve as your photographer. They are used to it and know what to do, so they’ll even give you ideas on poses and angles. So while sometimes the poses they would make you do are awkward, go for it and pose for Instagram because the result will be worth it!
Just make sure to go on a crystal kayak when it’s sunny so the color of the water is brighter, and you don’t need to photoshop it.
Choose your best beach outfit of the day (OOTD), and bring sunglasses, so you don’t squint because of the sun.
A crystal kayak session costs P250 per person and lasts 15 to 20 minutes.
You can also take “couple pics” with a significant other.
Crystal kayaks are available at White Beach and other resorts with coves.
Keyhole – An Eye-Catching Rock Formation
If you’ve been to Boracay before, you may have noticed the Keyhole, a natural arch visible from afar. But now, they made this rock formation more accessible. However, some parts are off-limits to protect it and the guests, and there are designated areas where you can take photos or see the view.
Keyhole beach, the end of Lapuz Lapuz Beach, is now labeled as such on tour brochures. It’s a staple stop for a land tour or e-trike tour. But if it’s the only place you want to visit, you can ride an e-trike and go straight here.
From the White Beach area, it costs P250 to P300 to go here.
Wider Beachfront and Fewer Structures
If your last visit to Boracay were before the 2018 closure of the island, you’d see a very different Boracay. The beachfront of White Beach is now much wider, and the structures within the 30-meter easement area, now a no-build zone, were demolished.
Vendors, fire dancers, masseuses, sand castles, and other activities on the beachfront are now prohibited. Because of this, White Beach’s sand looks brighter and unobstructed. They also became stricter about the number of tourists that come in.
New Dining Options
Aside from swimming and beach bumming, a food trip is another nice thing to do in Boracay! With the number of restaurants here, choosing a place to eat could be fun but challenging.
Boracay has undergone some changes over the past few years, but it remains one of the most beautiful islands in the world. From the wider beachfront to the crystal kayak and keyhole attractions, there are plenty of new things to discover and enjoy on your next visit.
Whether you’re a returning tourist or a first-time visitor, take advantage of the island’s stunning scenery and delicious food options. And remember to capture your memories in photos and share them with your loved ones!
